Applications to Cyber-Physical Systems in Robotics, Energy, Mobility, production Systems and Health

The SYSTEC Summer School on “Estimation, Control, Optimization and Data Science – Applications to Cyber-Physical Systems in Robotics, Energy, Mobility, Production Systems and Health” is organized into two components - scholar part and hands-on research part – designed to be for students in two levels of maturity: Research Initiation, and Research.
The scholar part comprehends the following curricular units with 20 hours of presential sessions taking place in the months indicate in parenthesis: Functional Analysis (July and August), Optimal Control (July and August), Machine Learning (July and August), Model Predictive Control (September), and Non-linear Control (September). The topics in each one of the curricular units may be regarded as a complementary continuation of the akin ones typically delivered in the first and second cycles of the Electrical and Computer Engineering and in Applied Mathematics, and in Computer Science. Moreover, they are designed to induce the use of advanced concepts in wide variety of societally relevant applications, and, thus, their role will be o provide the tools to be used in the research component at both levels.

This course will be held at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto.

The hands-on research component is designed to fit the following technical niches

Scholar Component:

  • Functional Analysis (July and August)
  • Optimal Control (July and August)
  • Machine Learning (July and August)
  • Model Predictive Control (September)
  • Non-linear Control (September)


Research Initiation for undergrad students. 

This consists on a set of personalized projects requiring basic knowledge that will be articulated in the following contexts:

  1. Control of drones, notably, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) of the copter type for surveillance, monitoring, support communications, and transportation of small packages.
  2. Optimization for the sustainable management of natural resources.
  3. Management and control of novel advanced systems for harvesting renewable energies
  4. Modelling and control of epidemic and pandemic phenomena
  5. Applications of Networked Systems – Control and Estimation – for Situational Awareness
  6. Management and control of Renewable Energy Systems integrated in the Electrical Grid
  7. Sustainable Mobility Systems
  8. Advanced Production Systems


Research for graduated students. 

This consists in more elaborate and in-depth projects that will be proposed by the research students as far as they fall in the scientific areas of the Summer School.
